Safeguarding: What are the challenges for International Schools?

British International Schools are unique in that their student population is made up of a broad range of nationalities, presenting both cultural and language challenges. However, schools report that it is this rich diversity that makes International Schools special, the British Curriculum is enriched rather than weakened.

In fact, one of their most significant challenges relates to safeguarding; adhering to British Schools Overseas standards whilst operating away from the legal regulation and support that is available in the UK.

In this video, experts from COBIS, headteachers of British International Schools and a specialist safeguarding advisor discuss how to manage safeguarding in International Schools and agree that without access to the safeguarding resources or services that are available in the UK, schools have to act independently.

The advice is that everyone in that school should learn how to support the children and young people in their care, and consider ‘What if’.

As the Principal from the British International School of Kuala Lumpur, Janet Brock, sums up so succinctly “Doing nothing is not an option”.
