Tennis becomes the latest sport to admit to child protection failings

Whilst it is the historic sexual abuse in football that has dominated newspaper headlines, figures released from Operation Hydrant in October showed that 27 referrals had been made about abuse in sports other than football.

On the 24th November, the LTA posted a public apology for its safeguarding failings, and announced that it is in the final stages of selecting a preferred supplier to undertake an enquiry into Wrexham Tennis Centre.

The arrest and subsequent conviction of the coach happened in 2017 and the abuse is recent, unlike many of the referrals in the football abuse scandal. In their article covering the extent of the abuse and the catalogue of failings, the Guardian commented that “in this modern era of increased awareness and compulsory safeguarding, concerns have been fuelled that the LTA’s procedures are inadequate, and add to growing arguments for an independent organisation to protect sportspeople.”
