Recommended safeguarding training courses for charities

On their website, the Charity Commission states:

Protecting people and safeguarding responsibilities should be a governance priority for all charities.

As part of fulfilling your trustee duties, you must take reasonable steps to protect people who come into contact with your charity from harm.

They also state that they expect that:

"all trustees, employees, volunteers and beneficiaries know about safeguarding and people protection"

Which safeguarding training courses are suitable for charities?

Charities must make sure all staff and volunteers receive regular training on child protection or working with adults at risk.

Another obligation is to examine recruitment practices, so training on Safer Recruitment would be recommended.

It would also be recommended to cross-reference the list of risks stated and identify training gaps in any organisation.

The risks specified by the Charity Commission include:

  • sexual harassment, abuse and exploitation
  • negligent treatment
  • physical or emotional abuse
  • bullying or harassment
  • health and safety
  • commercial exploitation
  • extremism and radicalisation
  • forced marriage
  • child trafficking
  • female genital mutilation

    • the four key stages of the recruitment process

    The aim of Prevent is to reduce the threat of terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. This course will help to build your awareness and knowledge of what extremism and radicalisation are, how people may be drawn in terrorism and what you should do if you have a concern about someone.

    Honour Based Abuse and Forced marriage

    Whilst growing up, a child may be taught that a set of behaviours are deemed to be honourable. If they display any dishonourable behaviours they may be abused by their family or members of their community as punishment. This course was written in partnership with Karma Nirvana, a national award-winning charity that supports both men and women affected by forced marriage and/or honour-based abuse.

    The purpose of this course is to help you:

    • understand what Honour Based Abuse (HBA) is
    • understand the difference between a Forced Marriage (FM) and arranged marriage
    • understand the prevalence of this type of abuse
    • understand which communities are affected
    • recognise what laws exist to protect people
    • be aware of early signs that might indicate abuse
    • know what action to take if you know or suspect that a young person is at risk
    • understand the motives and consequences of forced marriage
    • know what support is available.

    This course will provide a thorough guide to help those working with young people spot the signs that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has taken place, or signs that it will take place.

    The key aim here is to help professionals understand the risks and consequences of FGM, and how to act if they suspect a girl is in danger. This course provides a thorough understanding to anyone working with children and young girls.

    The Equality & Diversity course is a concise course that explains the fundamentals of equality and diversity and how they affect you. This includes looking at the Equality Act 2010 and the ‘protected characteristics’ that form the basis of the law, as well some of the barriers that can prevent equality being realised, such as prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination, victimisation and harassment. This course can help introduce new recruits to the subject or act as a refresher for current employees.

    This one module course delivers one CPD credit and comprehensively covers:

    • what equality and diversity mean and how they affect you
    • barriers that can prevent equality from being realised such as prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination, victimisation and harassment
