ITV documentary: Out of Their Skin

ITV documentary: Out of Their Skin

Ian Wright's documentary on ITV4 charts the rise of black footballers and shows how they challenged attitudes and triggered change.

Racism in sport

The documentary looks at historical issues with racism in football in the 1970s and '80s but also shows the cultural context of British society in those days as a whole, showing how even well-loved stars such as Eric Morecambe made casually racist comments.

In the two-part series, the documentary also covers how racism in football, and in sport in general, still exists today albeit to a lesser extent.

Equality and Diversity in Sport

Racism is just one of several Equality Strands that organisations such as UK Sport and Sport England are committed to eradicating. Equality in sport also covers:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender
  • Pregnancy
  • Religion
  • Sexual Orientation

The overall aim is to support the development of a fair, equitable and ethical world-class sporting system in the UK that is athlete-centred and people-focused. Equality is about recognising and removing the barriers faced by people involved, or wanting to be involved in sport. It is about changing the culture of sport to one that values diversity and enables the full involvement of disadvantaged groups in every aspect of sport.

Inclusion in Sport

EduCare is currently working with the organisation Inclusion in Sport on a new Equality and Diversity in Sport training course.

The course will help sports clubs and leisure providers understand:

  • what equality, diversity and inclusion are
  • what unconscious bias is
  • how to promote good practice.

The course will be included within the EduCare for Sport® training packages and will be available from January 2019.
