When you run a business, you’re always thinking about ways to expand it and bring your business to the next level. Often, when you’re thinking about ways in which to do this, it involves bringing new team members onboard.

Expanding your team is always exciting, but it’s also a very important, sensitive process. You want to ensure that these new potential team members are going to be able to contribute to your organisation in the ways that you need. If you work with children or vulnerable people, these factors are especially important to consider. The way in which to ensure the safety of your staff and those within your care is through safer recruitment training.

What is safer recruitment?

Safer recruitment refers to a recruitment process that safeguards the wellbeing of your team and those within your care. Safer recruitment training guides you through the A-Z of the job process, including all major stages of the job advertisement and hiring process to enable a safe and secure work environment for all.

What’s covered in safer recruitment training?

Safer recruitment training begins at the very beginning, covering what mechanisms that your workplace will need to have in place before any contact with potential candidates happens. This includes the importance of very clearly and openly communicating about your business or organisation's’ commitment to safeguarding during the entire recruitment process. The training also covers what elements to include when advertising for the role, and how to advertise the role itself.

Moving on from the job advertisement process and into the interview stage of recruitment, safer recruitment training includes how to scrutinise applications and effectively select the most appropriate candidates. The training also goes into detail about the kinds of questions to ask candidates, including asking candidates to verify that they are who they say they are and are eligible to work in the UK.

Included in this section of the training are the selection techniques and areas that you should avoid, and the importance of not making someone an offer simply because they were the best of the interviewees is also covered.

Safer recruitment training goes into depth about pre-employment checks, specifically the vetting checks provided by the DBS or other bodies registered with the DBS. This section of the training also covers what you need to do if you are considering employing an overseas applicant. No matter where your potential team members come from, solely relying on vetting checks does not constitute a safer recruitment process.

The training course also covers safer recruitment mechanisms that apply after you’ve hired a candidate, commonly known as observe and surprise. This final stage of the training looks at the measures your organisation can take to ensure that all new recruits are observed and supervised during their induction period and beyond, and all staff understand the importance of remaining vigilant to protect the and promote the welfare of children and young people or vulnerable adults.
