In the news: FGM and Operation Limelight

The National Police Chiefs’ Council reported on a new security agreement to share intelligence about travel patterns to countries where victims may be taken for FGM procedures.

Officers were based at key airports and terminals with the intention to identify where FGM may be planned or has been carried out.

Commander Ivan Balhatchet, Lead on Female Genital Mutilation at the National Police Chiefs’ Council,  said:

“FGM is a barbaric and violent crime enacted on girls who suffer the results for the rest of their lives. It is child abuse, and no religion, culture or tradition should be allowed to mitigate or make an excuse for such appalling crimes. It is even more traumatic because it is generally committed or facilitated by their families who they should look to for love and protection.

“FGM is not something we cannot eradicate alone. We need everyone who works with children and young people to be alert to signs of FGM, speak out and share information with us.”

FGM Statutory Duty

As stated in Keeping children safe in education teachers have a mandatory duty to report suspected incidences of FGM and that those who fail to report such cases will face disciplinary sanctions.

As such teachers need to have a thorough understanding of FGM and be able to spot the signs that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has taken place, or signs that it will take place.

Our FGM Awareness course costs £9.50 and can be bought online today. The course is also included in our complete safeguarding service for schools and colleges, EduCare for Education®.
