The Health and Safety Executive has launched a new initiative on the ‘sensible’ application of Health and Safety regulations. Fourteen local authorities have signed up to the initiative, the ‘Ten Principles of Sensible Risk Management’, launched at the Local Government Association’s annual conference earlier this month. The initiative aims to dispel myths around health and safety regulation.
As part of the campaign, HSE has also launched the ‘myth of the month’ cartoon. Each month the HSE website carries a cartoon exposing the various myths about ‘health and safety’.
Some of the HSE’s examples of sensible risk management include:
A solid understanding of what is and is not required of staff and managers is central to an effective health and safety culture. EduCare’s Health and Safety programme is a simple, easy and cost-effective method of ensuring your staff and managers are aware of their responsibilities.
The programme consists of 6 short learning modules, followed by questionnaires to test understanding. On successful completion of the programme participants receive a personalised IOSH certificate.

It has been reported that stress levels of our UK work-force are increasingly affected by the current global credit crisis. Money worries at home are leading to less productivity in the workplace and unmotivated teams, which in turn has both a negative impact on the economy and raises further health issues for staff.
In a study by Travelodge it was found that 38% of workers can’t leave their work behind them when they go home, and 75% admit to not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night. Not surprisingly, professions most affected by economic pressures are the worst sufferers. Estate agents top the list of stress related sleep deprived workers, with a current average of less than six hours sleep a night.
In a time of economic decline, we know that the first area in the budget to be cut is training and staff development. However, it is essential that in these difficult times we as employers look to maintain the HSE Management Standards and implement procedures to support and encourage the positive welfare of our staff. A happy team makes for happy customers and increased productivity which can only mean a quicker route to economic up turn!
To help you meet the HSE Standards we have developed in partnership with the Samaritans ‘EduCare WorkLife Stress Management’. The programme is also a useful tool to issue to staff who you are concerned maybe suffering from stress. And to help with the credit crunch we have launched this programme at only £44.50 +VAT, per person.

The 15th of June, was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and this week sees dozens of events taking place to mark the occasion. Co-ordinated by Action against Elder Abuse (AEA), events like Garden Parties, bric-a-brac sales, and even a Zimmerthon are being held to raise awareness across the country.
A recent study showed that 227,000 people over the age of 66 experience mistreatment every year. Abuse often goes unreported, so this figure probably doesn't represent the true scale of the problem.
“Thousands of elderly people suffer from abuse and it’s everybody’s responsibility to do what they can to prevent it from happening”, says Candice McDonald, Business Development Manager at EduCare, “Our programme 'Protecting Vulnerable Adults' was designed to raise awareness of the need to know safeguarding information and best practice guidance those working with the vulnerable must have and should implement to protect those within their care.
The programme was written in partnership with MENCAP, The Royal College of Nursing, St John Ambulance, The British Paramedics Association, Spirehealth and Unite the Union and carries the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Secured by Design mark.

A third of workers suffer from email stress, making email a major factor in the 14 million stress-related sick days taken every year.
With the deluge of emails most of us have flooding into our inbox every day, it’s easy to see how we might get distracted from the really important work we have to do.
The EduCare WorkLife Stress Management Programme, written with Samaritans, has this handy tip for reducing your email stress:
“Remove distractions.
If your work includes working with a computer, turn off your automatic email notifications and if you can, only check your inbox three times a day – first thing in the morning, before lunch and prior to leaving work. Emails have become a major source of distraction with people being copied in ‘for information only’.”
