This newly updated programme is supported by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), is designed to give both the employer and employee, in any field of work, a comprehensive, basic knowledge of health and safety in the workplace. It covers the essential facts to help you work more safely and contribute to the overall safety of your organisation.
The programme is delivered either paper-based or online, in six user-friendly modules, with questionnaires to test understanding, concluding with a final proficiency test. On successful completion participants are awarded a personalised IOSH certificate.
Module 1 – An Introduction to working safely
Understand why health and safety is important; how to identify hazards and minimize risks; the hierarchy of risk control measures and health and safety law.
Module 2 – Common health and safety hazards part 1
Learn about common hazards and how to control them; including temperature and lighting; works transport; fire and emergency procedures; hazardous substances; electricity and work equipment and violence and bullying.
Module 3 – Common health and safety hazards part 2
Complete learning about common hazards and how to control them by looking at working at heights; manual handling; computer workstations and noise and vibration.
Module 4 – Improving safety performance
Learn how to draw up safety management systems and policies; organise and involve staff in health and safety; improve communication; plan and set standards and monitor your organisation’s performance.
Module 5 – Accidents and emergencies
Discover what to do should an accident occur; how to prepare for unplanned events and emergencies; RIDDOR ‘95’. first aid and the role of enforcing officers.
Module 6 – Protecting your environment
Learn about the basic ways to help protect the environment; environmental facts and figures; different types of pollution. Including prevention and reduction and the powers of enforcement officers.
In order to complete the programme successfully you must complete the proficiency paper at the end of the programme. If you score 80 per cent or more on the proficiency test you will receive a personalised IOSH certificate, feedback detailing your scores from each module and a set of answer explanations.
